DescriptionJ.D. Irving, Limited is seeking a Controller to join our Sawmills Division, a key part of our vertically integrated forest products operations. This role is responsible for providing strong financial leadership to support operational performance, cost control, and strategic decision-making across the division.
The successful candidate will work closely with operations, senior leadership, and corporate finance to ensure accurate financial reporting, sound internal controls, and continuous improvement of financial processes within a manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for the Sawmills Division.
- Deliver accurate, timely financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Maintain strong internal controls and compliance with JDI financial policies and procedures.
- Coordinate audit requirements and serve as a key contact for internal and external auditors.
- Partner with Sawmills operational leadership as a trusted finance advisor.
- Provide clear, actionable analysis and insights to support operational performance and strategic initiatives.
- Translate complex financial results into meaningful information for non-finance stakeholders.
- Champion automation, data analytics, and emerging AI capabilities within finance.
- Continuously improve and standardize processes to reduce manual effort, improve efficiency, and enhance data quality.
- Collaborate with corporate finance and technology teams on system enhancements and finance transformation initiatives.
- Lead, coach, and develop finance team members; support succession planning and talent development.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- CPA designation (CPA, CA / CPA, CMA / CPA, CGA) required
- 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, preferably in manufacturing, forestry, or industrial operations
- Strong background in cost accounting and financial analysis
- Experience supporting plant or mill operations is a strong asset
- Proven leadership and people-management skills
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and experience with ERP systems
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, operationally focused environment
