Hours: 10 hours per week
Term: September 20 – April 30, 2027
Compensation: $17.50
Reports to: Vice President of Finance and Operations

ABOUT

The Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) is an incorporated non-profit with the objectives of:

  • acting as the official representative organization of Dalhousie students;
  • serving as the medium of communication between Dalhousie students and the governing bodies of the University;
  • encouraging Dalhousie students to have an awareness of their responsibilities in the local, provincial, national, and international community;
  • providing services and programming that enhance student life in a financially, socially, and environmentally responsible manner.

With over 20,000 members, the DSU is here to make sure students get the most out of their experience at Dalhousie. The DSU advocates for student rights, builds community on campus through events, supports over 250 societies, and provides discount services!

About the Role

The Dalhousie Student Union Graduate Office is seeking a Programing Coordinator to help create opportunities for graduate students to connect, build community, and engage with the Graduate Office.

The Programing Coordinator will work closely with the Graduate Office Manager to plan and deliver events for graduate students across Dalhousie. The role is well suited to someone who is organized, creative, comfortable working independently, and interested in strengthening graduate student life.

A major focus of the position will be developing events that are welcoming and useful to graduate students from different programs, faculties, campuses, and stages of study.

Responsibilities

The Programing Coordinator will:

  • Plan and coordinate social, community-building, educational, and professional-development events for graduate students.
  • Develop an events calendar in collaboration with the Graduate Office Manager.
  • Identify event ideas based on graduate student interests and needs.
  • Coordinate event logistics, including room bookings, food, supplies, equipment, and accessibility needs.
  • Work within approved event budgets and maintain clear records of expenses.
  • Promote events through graduate societies, DSU communications, social media, newsletters, and other appropriate channels.
  • Build relationships with graduate societies and other campus groups to organize collaborative events.
  • Attend and help facilitate Graduate Office events.
  • Collect attendance information and participant feedback to help evaluate events.
  • Help ensure events are inclusive and accessible to graduate students across different academic programs and communities.
  • Support other Graduate Office outreach and engagement initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is currently a Dalhousie student, with preference given to graduate students.
  • Has strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Is comfortable coordinating multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally.
  • Is approachable and comfortable working with students from a wide range of backgrounds and programs.
  • Can work independently while communicating regularly with the Graduate Office Manager.
  • Has an interest in graduate student community-building and student engagement.
  • Previous experience organizing events, participating in student societies, clubs, student government, or community organizations is an asset, but is not required.

What We’re Looking For

The strongest candidate will be someone who understands that graduate student life can be fragmented. Graduate students are spread across many programs, faculties, campuses, research groups, and schedules, and often have fewer opportunities to meet students outside their immediate academic environment.

The Programing Coordinator should be interested in finding practical and creative ways to bring graduate students together and make the Graduate Office a visible and welcoming part of graduate student life.

Hours and Working Conditions

This is a part-time position of approximately 10 hours per week. Hours will generally be flexible, although some evening or occasional weekend work may be required depending on event schedules.

The Programing Coordinator will work closely with the Graduate Office Manager in developing and coordinating events within the priorities and budget of the Graduate Office.

The Dalhousie Student Union welcomes the contributions that individuals from traditionally marginalized communities, as outlined under the prohibited grounds for discrimination in the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act, bring to our organization. Marginalized communities include racialized people; Indigenous people; women; lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender and queer people; and people with disabilities. We encourage applicants to self-identify in their cover letter or application if they are a member of a marginalized community.
