The Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) is a multi-disciplinary unit that offers comprehensive training, research, and entrepreneurial services. Founded in 2016, CIC provides a platform for researchers and practitioners to work together in a congenial environment, share ideas, and undertake interdisciplinary research and training.

Salary Range: $56,416 - $73,324 per annum
YOUR FOCUS
Reporting to the Director, the Systems Administrator & SOC Operations will develop, administer, and maintain the overall system architecture for the CIC/CADC network, servers, and information systems.
- Develop, administer, and maintain system architecture for CIC/CADC networks, servers, and information systems that support research, training programs, and administrative initiatives.
- Install, configure, and maintain Windows and Linux servers; manage patching, updates, hardening, and compliance; support high-availability systems for cyber threat analysis.
- Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS/DHCP, and identity integrations across campus systems.
- Deploy, configure, and manage virtual environments using VMware and Hyper-V; administer containerized environments using OpenShift; optimize resources for research workloads.
- Administer enterprise storage platforms; manage secure storage of research datasets, logs, and forensic images; monitor capacity and performance.
- Implement and manage backup solutions such as Veeam; ensure disaster recovery readiness and data integrity; conduct backup testing and restoration validation.
- Perform system patching, updates, configuration hardening, and lifecycle management; maintain reliable backup, recovery, and disaster resilience practices.
- Plan, install, support, and maintain workstations, servers, R&D lab devices, and cross-platform environments (UNIX, Windows, macOS); administer physical and logical networks, including switches, routers, and firewalls; design secure, segmented research and SOC lab networks; monitor performance and security.
- Maintain systems for log aggregation, SIEM, malware analysis, and forensic investigation; support secure research environments and analysis sandboxes.
- Provide front-line technical support; manage network operations, system monitoring, backups, software licensing, hardware assets, and user accounts.
- Monitor SIEM platforms such as Microsoft Sentinel and Splunk; analyze security events; support incident response activities; tune detection rules to reduce false positives.
- Administer cloud services such as AWS and Azure; configure IAM, networking, storage, and compute resources; maintain secure and cost-effective cloud environments.
- Support specialized faculty applications, lab systems, and departmental IT services; assist with infrastructure for in-person, online, and hybrid instruction.
- Maintain inventory of computing resources; track hardware, software, licensing, and lifecycle management; support procurement planning.
- Maintain and update CIC/CADC and program websites, including structure, layout, and content.
- Monitor system performance, availability, and capacity; maintain documentation such as architecture diagrams, procedures, and runbooks.
- Participate in IT governance, security reviews, and compliance activities; support audits and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell, Bash, and Python to improve operational efficiency.
- Configure and manage Jira workflows, permissions, and automation; support project tracking and reporting for research teams.
- Design, implement, and maintain secure configurations for infrastructure and web platforms; identify and remediate vulnerabilities; implement access controls and data protection mechanisms.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- 7 years of related experience.
- 3-5+ years of systems administration experience in complex environments.
Additional Strengths
- Certifications such as Microsoft Azure Administrator, MCSA/MCSE, Security+, CySA+, GCIH, GCIA, VMware VCP, Linux+, or RHCSA are considered an asset.
- Experience with identity and access management is considered an asset.
- Strong technical expertise in Windows and/or Linux server administration.
- Hands-on experience with SIEM and EDR tools, preferably in a higher education environment.
- Solid understanding of virtualization technologies, cloud services, and enterprise storage systems.
- Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to support academic and research environments.
- Knowledge of systems analysis and design principles, with experience in programming, web technologies, and automation scripting.
- Experience with database design and management.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, with strong initiative and a solid work ethic.
